Thanks there have been a lot of speculations on the Ravelry list as to what function these possibly could have served Among the contenders- bobbin lace , corset decor, floss or thread sorters I will look up and list all the thoughts Guess we may never know but someone put some work into these as they are really really pretty

This might be way off base, but the first thing that comes to mind for me is bobbin lace making or tatting. I was a little girl the last time I saw it done, but this evokes memories of same, so perhaps it's related? Or perhaps I'm just remembering seeing bobbins that looked like that....Anyway, just a thought. ^_^

My apologies Annie Modesitt unvented this stitch and made it legit Check out her site as well On the link in the above post look for Combination purl
Annie M named it and has also called it the lazy purl because it takes such little effort but one has to mind where the leading leg is to make it work
I have direct links to purl videos on the side under Blogroll as well
take care

I usually have not wound nice skeins into balls and did not this time and learned WHY my grandmother told me to do so
It became hugely tangled inside and took me over 35 minutes to untangle it
We should listen to our grannies haha

I wonder, also, what was knitted on these as the needles are worn. I am thinking-- maybe for the fishing trade-netting or something for the boat ,to toss out to catch fish (??). They are very very heavy so maybe a sturdy fisherman and his wife worked with these (?)
I will buy some more jute and cast on and see what knit stitch or purl looks like and then see what a simple lace " yarn over knit 2 together"
looks like. It should be HUGE haha

Brown Sheep is the brand of yarn I used and Cotton Fleece is the type of Brown Sheep yarn I picked
You can use any worsted weight washable cotton/ linen or the blend that I chose was cotton with a bit of wool .
